As we noted above, animal protein is a major culprit in the loss of calcium from bones, and avoiding animal protein completely can cut calcium losses dramatically.2

Sodium is aggressive at encouraging calcium loss via the kidneys. Cutting your salt intake to one to two grams per day can reduce your calcium needs substantially. To do this, look out for salt in canned goods and snack foods—often the amount is phenomenally high.
